Former Network Ten CEO James Warburton did not have enough time to turn around the ailing network, he has said.
Warburton headed up the network for just over a year, but was sacked in February. He said he “needed more time” to address the sliding ratings.
Speaking to the Financial Review Sunday, Warburton said: “I have been working for 25 years and 24 of them have been good to spectacular, and obviously that was not a great year.
“But I left with no regrets. I needed more time. I notice their new CEO has the board’s approval on a three to five-year plan to turn Ten around and I think that’s about the right time. That’s the time you would need to make a major transformation.”
Warburton is now CEO of V8 Supercars.
The former Universal McCann managing director, who then worked at Seven for nine year ending up as chief sales officer, said he is confident his sudden departure from Ten will not affect future relations.
“The media are great haters,” he said. “When you are in competition, there is great animosity and hatred. But I would not be sitting in this role if I didn’t think I could work with those networks.”
He added: “I feel I have got the ability and I know them well – I know the products well and I know what they are looking for.”
On his plans for V8 Supercars, he said: “We have got to run the business more professionally and achieve greater results for our teams.
“The opportunity for us is how we develop our product. Where is the next growth strategy? Where is the innovation and creativity in the business?
“There is enormous opportunity for us to broaden our sport and get better commercial outcomes and to be a sport of choice for many marketers and advertisers.”
He said the sport needs more sponsors and he is looking at changes including introducing twilight and night racing, and more family-friendly events.
