State of Origin TV rate cards soar

Brands wanting to advertise during tonight’s State of Origin match will have to fork out 15% more than they did last year on TV space, media buyers have told B&T.

According to media agencies, the rate card for a 30 second TVC during Nine’s coverage of the event is sky high this time round, between $50,000 and $55,000.

Client discounts aren’t bringing much relief either. B&T understands that big clientele is only being offered discounts in the vicinity of 10% to 20%.

Last year’s first game scored 2.51 million viewers across the five city metro markets, according to preliminary ratings from OzTam. It was the highest result for a first game since the introduction of OzTam in 2001.

One media buying expert said the network was justified in pushing prices to unprecedented levels.
