A new statistically based measure of skilled labour supply has found a significant shortage of advertising and sales managers in the online and social media sectors.
The Clarius Skills Indicator draws on the best available data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) and Commonwealth Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR) to measure oversupply and shortfalls for 10 major occupation categories, covering approximately half of all white-collar jobs (more than 4 million employees) or 35 per cent of the total Australian labour force.
The overall shortage of skilled advertising and sales managers has worsened with the shortage increasing from 1,600 in December 2012, to 2,200 for the March quarter 2013, where there are currently more than 126,000 employed.
There has been positive movement in a number of sectors for advertising and sales staff, including the newspaper industry, FMCG, paper packaging and general service companies, such as catering.
Meanwhile, in the sales, marketing and public relations professionals category, there is a very small shortage of 200 in a sector currently employing around 126,000 in a very balanced jobs market in terms of supply and demand of skilled professionals.
