After 40 years on Melbourne television veteran news presenter Mal Walden is stepping down from his anchor role with Ten News.
Walden, who has spent more than half of his 40 consecutive years on Melbourne TV with Ten, will walk away from his senior newsreader role at the end of the year.
He will continue to present Ten News Melbourne three days a week, from now until December.
Network Ten CEO Hamish McLennan said it was a “sad day” for Ten, and the network is “very grateful” Walden is staying until the end of the year.
“Mal is television news in Melbourne. For the past 25 years, he has brought the big news
stories to TEN’s viewers with authority, integrity and passion.”
“Simply saying ‘thank you’ is not enough, but thank you Mal. Everyone at Network Ten and all our viewers will miss you and wish you the very best.”
The word ‘retirement’ was absent from the Network Ten release, and a reason for Walden’s departure was also not given. According to the Herald Sun Walden would consider taking on less time-consuming TV work from next year.
Walden’s colleagues described him as a “top bloke” and “universally respected”.
Dermot O’Brien, director of Ten News Melbourne, said: “A genuinely nice guy both on and off the screen, Mal’s warmth and honesty has engendered a tremendous long-term connection with audiences.”
