Rainbow rhinos have taken over the steps of the Sydney Opera House today, causing quite the stir amongst passers-by.
NSW Environment Minister, Robyn Parker, welcomed the 17 life-size replicas of the Black Rhinoceros this morning, adding they were also being installed throughout Sydney and Taronga Western Plains Zoo in Dubbo from February 2 until April 28.
“This project is part of Taronga’s strategy to engage and educate the community in wildlife conservation beyond the physical boundaries of the zoo, whether through digital channels, traditional media, and partnerships such as the recent series of wildlife collectible cards with Woolworths,” Paul Davies, Taronga’s general manager for marketing and fundraising, said.
“This is a truly innovative community conservation campaign by Taronga to use art and wildlife to engage people from all walks of life in urban and regional NSW in a vital cause to help save rhinoceroses from an epidemic of poaching.
“If we don’t act, the number of rhinos poached will exceed the birth rate by 2016 tipping them towards extinction.”
You can follow the trail of 55 adult rhinos and their 70 calves through Sydney's CBD before they stop in the Blue Mountains, Bathurst, Orange, Cowra, Parkes and ending up in Dubbo.
The adults were pained by professional artists from around Australia, including Ken Done and Camilla Frank and school children from Wagga to Wenona unleashed their creativity upon the baby calves.
