The MediaCom CEO has hailed the agency’s competitiveness in a tough market after it was confirmed it had retained the Queensland Government media account.

The Queensland Government, which is one of the country’s biggest spending advertisers with a media spend in excess $40 million, put its media account out to tender late last year, putting incumbent MediaCom Brisbane on alert.

MediaCom CEO Mark Pejic (pictured) told B&T he was “absolutely delighted” to retain the lucrative business, having seen off stiff opposition from Mitchells and OMD, while also paying tribute to the work of the agency’s team in Brisbane.

Pejic also dismissed recent reports that the agency was experiencing a tough second half to the year having recently lost media buying duties for the NSW Government, pointing out that MediaCom is still one of a panel of agencies providing media planning services along with Match Media, Optimum Media Direction.

“We’re absolutely delighted to retain our long-term partnership with the Queensland Government,” he said. “It’s on the back of some great work by Nicole Boyd [Mediacom MD in Brisbane] and her team.”

On the issue of UM taking media buying duties for NSW Government, Pejic said: “We’ve not lost the whole of the NSW Government, we’re still on its planning, so we’ve been retained on its roster."

Pejic also pointed to MediaCom Melbourne coming out of the Specsavers media pitch victorious after successfully defending its account against three other agencies to retain the $20m account, while still being in contention for the CUB media account, which a decsion on that expected soon.

MediaCom has held the Queensland Government account since 2005, and retained it twice since.
