More redundancies at Metro Media as titles close

EXCLUSIVE: Metro Media Publishing (MMP) is set to announce a number of redundancies and reductions in working hours as two of its titles close.

A MMP spokesperson confirmed to B&T this afternoon that eight positions would be made redundant at its Central office in South Melbourne,  while 12 staff will have their working hours reduced.

The move has been made to slash costs and is focused on some of the group’s struggling mastheads within the Central group.

The redundancies will come from The Boroondara and Stonnington Review Locals, which are set to close in the coming weeks after only being launched last year, with the last editions going to print on 21 May.

The merger of MMP and Fairfax Community Network Victoria last year created Melbourne's biggest local media company.

The MMP spokesperson added that many of the big challenges MMP currently face were inherited, and that some difficult dicisions have had to be made.  It is not yet known if any loss-making titles in MMP’s East division will suffer a similar fate.

Speaking to Crikey, Antony Catalano (pictured), managing director of MMP in Melbourne, said the group had worked for nearly 12 months to try and turn around some of the businesses that were loss makers as part of the deal. "But the reality is that some of them aren’t fixable. And that means we have to make some tough decisions,” he said.

Late last year 29 staff were made redundant from some MMP titles.
