Melbourne turns on Essendon special, Offspring wins the slot

Interest in Seven’s report into the Essendon drug scandal was high last night with only two programs achieving higher ratings in Melbourne last night.

The exclusive interview with ‘The Weapon’, former Essendon high-performance manager Dean Robinson, was watched by 410,000 Melbournians.

Only two programs – The X Factor and Nine News – outperformed The Inside Man special report in terms of total people in Melbourne, according to OzTam’s preliminary metro ratings.

The Inside Man pulled in a total of 691,000 people last night, coming third in the 8.30pm time slot behind Ten’s Offspring and Nine’s Arrow. The special report was broadcast later at 10.45pm in both Sydney and Brisbane.

The panel which followed the interview had a total of 610,000 viewers, with 389,000 of those based in Melbourne.

Meanwhile, Seven’s The X Factor dominated the ratings for the third night running with an audience of 1.490 million.

Nine’s Big Brother came second to Seven’s talent show again last night but beat Home and Away (954,000) to take an audience of 1.03 million when it started at 7pm.

MasterChef Australia came third in the timeslot when considering commercial channels with 714,000 viewers. When considering all channels the cooking competition came fourth in the 7.30pm slot, behind the ABC’s 7.30 (838,000) and QI (816,000).

Ten’s Offspring won the 8.30 to 9.30 bracket last night, with 874,000 viewers in ninth place. It beat Nine’s Arrow which came 16th with an audience of 699,000.

The strength of Offspring saw Ten win a 19.6% share of free-to-air viewers last night. Seven won the night with a 32.1% share ahead of Nine’s 25.1%.

The ABC took 18.2% and SBS won 5%.
