Marketing jobs in jeopardy as Target wields the axe

Marketing roles are expected to be in the firing line after Target announced that it's to axe 260 jobs from its head office.

The jobs cuts are in the company's store support centre in Geelong, where Target’s marketing and sales divisions are located, and in regional support locations.

Target staff were being told of their fate this morning, with the redundancy numbers from the various departments expected to be released later today. When contacted by B&T this morning, a Target spokesperson could not confirm at the time whether any marketing jobs were part of the cuts.

About 1000 staff work at the company's Geelong headquarters.

Target managing director Stuart Machin said the restructuring decision was difficult, but  necessary in order to get the business on a sustainable path to growth.

"This is an extremely difficult time for our team, and unfortunately we’ll be losing many great team members,” said Machin.

"With our sales and profit under-performance over the past 12 months, we have needed to act in order to get our costs under control and the right store support structure in place."
