#LeadersDebate lights up Twitter

Twitter heated up for an hour during last night’s first Leaders’ Debate, with more than 100,000 tweets around the event.

There were 75,000 tweets that referenced either #LeadersDebate, Kevin Rudd, Tony Abbott or other related terms.

Tony Abbott was the winner in the Twittersphere with the most tweets, with 30% of those 75,000 tweets referencing @TonyAbbottMHR only.

PM Kevin Rudd’s Twitter handle @KRuddMP was referenced in 25% of the tweets, and 9% of the conversation referenced both.

Abbott was also responsible for the biggest peak in Twitter conversation, when he discussed same-sex marriage at 7.25pm. There were 1,952 tweets per minute at this point.

Other peak moments were when the National Broadband Network and the budget were mentioned at 7.02pm (1,517 tweets per minute) and when maritime law and asylum was discussed at 6.51pm (1,488 tweets per minute).

There was also a peak in activity when the debate concluded at 7.29pm, with 2,010 tweets per minute about what had been discussed.
