A new ‘Where great begins’ tourism push hopes to entice Queenslanders to visit the Southern Great Barrier Reef as the State Government aims to double overnight visitor expenditure by 2020.
Overnight visitors currently spend $15bn but the government and Tourism and Events Queensland (TEQ) wants that figure to hit $30bn in seven years time.
The latest QLD tourism push has for the first time brought together the Bundaberg, Gladstone and Capicorn regions to promote it as the ‘Southern Great Barrier Reef’.
Jane Stuckey, minister for tourism, major events, small business and Commonwealth Games, described ‘Where great begins’ as a “significant marketing campaign”.
“This campaign showcases a reef that is within reach for many Queenslanders looking for a secluded holiday experience and the opportunity to snorkel, dive and sail,” Ms Stuckey said.
“Many people are unaware that you can stay overnight in this section of the reef, wake-up the next day and snorkel directly off the shore.”
Campaign activities include TV, print, radio, online and outdoor with advertisements to run from now until June 30.
