Fairfax has promoted The Sydney Morning Herald’s news director, Darren Goodsir, to editor-in-chief of the masthead.
Goodsir (pictured), who started his career as a News Limited copyboy in 1985, replaces Sean Aylmer who was promoted to director of business media last week.
Director of news media at Fairfax, Garry Linnell, said: “Darren is an outstanding newsroom leader and was a clear choice for the role. He has an instinctive understanding of our audiences and what they expect from the Herald – across all of its publishing platforms.
“He is also an intuitive newsman who has earned an enormous amount of respect from his peers throughout the industry. Everyone knows Darren as the sort of editor who will fiercely defend the independence of the Herald and its journalists.”
Goodsir added: “The SMH has a proud tradition of being an independent source of news and I am committed to giving our readers the very best journalism in the nation.”
His resume includes time at a number of major news mastheads, including The Australian, he spent two years as press and policy advisor for the NSW Police Commissioner and has worked in Hong Kong.
He first joined Fairfax in 1997, spent six months covering in Bali covering the bombings and has held numerous positions including chief of staff and national security reporter.
Having once been police reporter for The Daily Telegraph, he has published two true-crime novels. ABC miniseries Blue Murder was based on one of his novels.
