Gai Melbourne Cup ratings for Seven

The race that stops the nation stole the ratings yesterday as the Melbourne Cup helped Seven to a 33.8% share of all free-to-air viewers.

More than two million people (2.168 million) watched Gai Waterhouse win her first Melbourne Cup as Fiorente galloped first across the finish line.

The majority of viewers were from Melbourne, were 1.06 million enjoyed the Victorian public holiday by tuning in. Just 470,000 Sydneysiders watched the race with only 304,000 viewers from Brisbane, 168,000 from Adelaide and 166,000 in Perth.

The Cup Presentation was watched by 1.784 million people and 1.406 million stayed for the mounting yard broadcast.

The lead in of Cup festivities helped Seven News to a larger share of audience, taking 1.284 million it beat Nine News which had 1.083 million viewers.

Seven’s Dancing with the Stars took fifth place, pulling in 1.134 million people.

Nine’s most watched entertainment show was Big Brother in 11th place with an audience of 884,000 people.

Ten’s most watched program was NCIS. In 14th place the show won over 699,000 viewers for Ten.

With a total 33.8% share Seven’s main channel took 25.2%.

The result left Nine with a total 25.8% share and 18% for its primary channel. Ten came third with a total 17.9% share with 12.4% for the network’s main channel.

ABC sat on a combined 16.5% with 11.3% for ABC1. SBS was left with 6% and 5.2% for SBS One.
