Droga5 founding partner Ben Nott has directed a new surf-action feature film called Drift which premiered to members of the advertising community in Sydney last night.
The feature marks Nott’s directorial debut on the big screen after seven years directing TVCs which have won him over 60 international creative advertising and directing awards, including the Grand Prix, Golds, Silvers, Bronzes and Titaniums at Cannes.
Creative agency World Wide Mind – which Nott also founded and owns – and post production house Heckler last night hosted the premiere at Dendy Cinemas, Circular Quay.
The film, co-directed by writer Morgan O’Neill and starring Sam Worthington, is set in the 1970s and based on true stories of the early years of companies such as Quiksilver, Billabong and Rip Curl. It tells the story of two brothers at the genesis of the modern surf industry.
Nott said: “I’ve always been addicted to good ideas, executed well, in any medium. The learnings in advertising give you a great platform to help tell stories on any platform, including film.”
Drift recently took out the top three awards – Best Feature Film, Audience Choice, Best of the Fest – at the Rincon International Film Festival, Puerto Rico and is currently screening at the Newport Beach Film Festival.
Post house Heckler created the opening title sequence. Of note was a montage of 8mm film projections overlaid with vision from the film to create an authentic 1960s atmosphere for Drift’s evocative premise. Executive Producer Will Alexander said Nott had been a mentor, collaborator and dear friend for many years.
