Digital radio's new high

Digital radio has hit a new high, with just under 13% of all radio listening per week occurring via a DAB+ device.

More than 1.6 million people, or 12.7%, listen to digital radio every week now, according to today’s GfK Marketscope report released by Commercial Radio Australia (CRA).

Time spent listening (TSL) to digital radio is now more than double the time spent listening via the internet.

TSL via the internet is just over five and half hours compared to digital radio’s 12 hours.

In quarter three of this year more than 87,500 DAB+ devices were sold bringing the total number to more than 1.4 million since its 2009 launch.

CRA’s chief executive officer Joan Warner said: “These listening and sales figures for digital radios are very encouraging and we look forward to a successful digital radio Christmas promotion in coming weeks.”

The number of Australian vehicles now including DAB+ digital radio as a standard or option has hit 11 with truck and bus manufacturer Fuso jumping on board.

Other manufacturers supporting digital radio include Ford, Jaguar, Mercedes, Hino, Audi and Toyota.
