Nods and Winks to Replace Secret Questions
That’s right, facial recognition technology might be coming to a smartphone near you. In patents registered by Google there is some nifty tech that could see passwords replaced with a funny face, protruding tongue or raised eyebrow. Whether or not these innovations see the light of day remains to be seen, but image recognition is an exciting and evolving area and one to stay on top of. Check them out here.
Smart Garden Takes on Your Watering Duties
This incredibly cool KickStarter project, the ‘Smart Herb Garden’ by Click and Grow, was born out of an investigation by its founder into how NASA grew plants in space. This clever micro-system monitors and controls water, food and light in order to ensure ideal conditions for the plants. Seedlings are sold in cartridges just like a printer, so when you’re done with one you simply replace the cartridge and start growing the next bunch.
Flying Store Brings The Shopping to You
Korea seems to be about five years ahead of the rest of the world when it comes to online shopping. It brought us ‘supermarket in the subway’, and now it brings us another quirky example of innovating retail, the ‘Emart Flying Store’. Developed to enhance shopping convenience for hard working Koreans, the Emart Flying Store is a balloon equipped with Wi-Fi that literally flies to previously unconnected areas of town so shoppers can download coupons and purchase items from EMart right where they are.
Social Photo’s Just Got Real
These days people snap pictures of just about everything. The immediacy and ease of taking photos combined with the social currency and community they generate provide hours of personal enjoyment and plenty of opportunity for voyeurs. What we don’t often do though is print them. That’s where ‘Piccolo’ fits in. It’s a subscription service that automatically prints your photos each month based on which ones have been the most popular from your connected services like Facebook or Instagram. See it here
Coub – The Next Big, Short File Format?
We’ve loved GIFs, YouTube videos and more recently Vines, but there is a new kid on the block – Coub. Coub offers looping, light videos but its point of difference is that the loops, which can be user created or pilfered from YouTube, can be also scored with a musical track. This is proving to be a huge hit with the creatively minded, and memes never sounded so good.
