Cannes: Optimism abounds for Aussie contenders

As the Cannes Lions Festival celebrates its 60th anniversary more than 200 Australian marketers, media professionals and creative have officially registered for the gala event.

As a celebration  of the 60th anniversary organisers have commissioned cartoonist Gerald Scarfe to create a new logo (pictured), to mixed reactions from delegates.

The first shortlists have started coming through, although the Promotion and Activation list has so far been delayed as the jury works through the contenders, with two Australian agencies already showing strongly.

McCann Melbourne has a sizeable crew in the Cote D’Azure, and have already garnered four nominations in the Direct category, with three for Dumb Ways to Die.

The only thing standing between the most successful viral ad ever and domination this year could be the success it has already achieved at other shows cloudy the judge’s decisions.

Leo Burnett Sydney have also scored four nominations in Direct, as well as the only Aussie agency to make the shortlist for the Innovation category, with a presentation to judges to follow later today for the Small World Machines campaign for Coca-Cola.

Marketers representing Telstra, TAL Direct, ANZ, Google, Simplot, Samsung and other Australian brands have also made the long-haul trip.

Speakers slated for this year include David Droga, Sir Martin Sorrell, Pete Favat, Jonathan Mildenhall, Lee Clow and

Celebrities on the slate include Sean Combes (AKA P Diddy), Mel B, Jack Black, Conan O’Brien, legendary singer Lou Reed, F1 driver Jenson Button and designer Vivienne Westwood.

The sun has burned through the cloud, millionaires are plying on their mega yachts right outside the press room, and Australia is in with a shout of eclipsing last year’s record Lions haul.

And the Young Lions have also kicked off. We’ll have an exclusive column from the Press entrants with all their experiences after the winner’s are announced Monday evening Australian time.
