With a new channel being launched, the ambition to double its global reach and the covering of the World Cup on bbc.com/sport, BBC Worldwide has a busy year ahead of them.
Yesterday thirteen different agencies competed against each other in BBC’s Brazilian Football Fiesta to promote the bbc.com’s coverage of the World Cup, with Alistair McEwan, vice president of advertising and sales for BBC saying the event “met all our expectations and surpassed them”.
“You know the whole idea of doing this was to really connect with agencies around idea of the whole World Cup that’s coming up in the middle of the year and we wanted to find an opportunity to kind of bring Brazil to life,” he said.
“This was it, what better way to promote our coverage of Brazil in the World Cup through creating an event that really allows that to flourish.”
Going beyond the matches bbc.com will host a variety of programming that explores the human stories behind the game, and how the game influences Brazil’s culture.
“Every four years the world gathers around for one of the great sporting events, that brings people together from all different cultures and bbc.com will be there at the forefront covering it from all angles,” McEwan said.
Aside from the World Cup, August this year will be the time BBC will launch its new drama and comedy channel, BBC First.
The channel, as part of Foxtel’s Drama and Lifestyle package, will feature premium British content and premiere programming from the BBC and other great British producers that will not be available on terrestrial TV for another 12 months.
The next three years will also see BBC executing its ambition to double its global news reach from 250 million to 500 million.
BBC Worldwide will transform bbc.com to make it the home of more video content, all BBC commercial online offerings and presenting it as a single route to all its partners.
The overall winners of the day were Match Media with the team beaming as they were presented with the glorious trophy and the honour of being crowned the 5 a-side Football Agency Cup champions.
Following the grueling soccer matches, the teams retreated to the Brazilian themed fiesta on Grand Drive in Centennial Park.
With pineapple centrepieces and an abundance of champagne, wine and caipirinha cocktails the guests were treated to heart-pumping Brazilian drumming and some very sparkly Brazilian dancers who shimmied and shook around.
The agencies that competed were Media.com, ZenithOptimedia, Starcom, OMD, TMS, Mediabrands, Ikon Communications, Reprise Media, Neo@Ogilvy, Match Media and MEC.
As a brand new section on bbc.com/sport, the website will offer a variety of different content about the World Cup.
