Alf Stewart risks his neck in first local Snickers spot

The first local spot in the global Snickers “You’re not you when you’re hungry” campaign may be a contender for best use of Alf from Home and Away in an advert at awards shows this year.

Created by Clemenger BBDO Melbourne for the confectionary giant, it plays on the character of Alf (real name Ray Meagher) and his cantankerous nature,  on a rally-cross bike.

It follows the global work which started three years ago with the Betty White ad, which premiered at the Super Bowl.

Mars Segment Leader – Bars, Brad Cole, said of Meagher: ““He doesn’t normally do commercials – he’s very protective of his personal brand. But he’d seen the Betty White ads and just loved them.

“We feel so lucky to have such an iconic Australian actor working for Snickers.”

ECD Ant Keogh added while every global market has its own version “I’m pretty sure no one else’s has a “flamin’ heck” in it”.

The spot was shot at Appin Motor Cross track in NSW, directed by Brendan Gibbons, who was also responsible for the Mars ‘Runaway Train’ campaign released at the end of last year, with stunt man Rhys James taking on the actual jump.
