British adventurer Bear Grylls is the star of Air New Zealand’s latest in-flight safety video, ‘The Bear Essentials of Safety’.

Grylls filmed the video late last year on the Routeburn Track near Fiordland in New Zealand’s South Island late last year.

The video pays homage to Grylls’ propensity to eat strange things (in this spot he gobbles a glow worm) and his soft spot for adventure.

Three young Scouts, who mistake the drop down air mask as a portable loo, also star in the video.

Mike Tod, chief marketing and customer officer Air New Zealand, said: “Bear was the ideal partner to help us bring to life important on-board safety messages in a unique and compelling way while at the same time demonstrating the best of what New Zealand has to offer.”

“We hope the global attention this safety video will receive generates more awareness of our amazing country and gets a few more bums on seats.”

People who view the video online can win a trip for two to New Zealand by counting how many times the Moa appears before his character is revealed. To enter the competition click here.

The Gryll safety ad is the latest in a string of celebrity and themed safety videos for the airline.

The most recent video featured a tie-in with Hollywood film The Hobbit and featured goblins and hobbits selling safety (below).

Other videos included the All Blacks themed ‘Crazy About Rugby and Fit to Fly’ featuring “fitness legend”, Richard Simmons.

‘The Bear Essentials of Safety’ will be rolled out across the Air New Zealand fleet from today.
