ASTRA Awards: Audiences love lifestyle while industry prefers drama

Last night’s subscription television ASTRA Awards proved audiences love lifestyle programming, while the industry loves drama. The glitzy industry evening was hosted at the Sydney Theatre Company and saw The LifeStyle Channel winning over subscribers, while Tangled was a popular favourite with the industry.

The evening was hosted by the ever-charismatic Deborah Hutton who was up for Favourite Female Presenter. Jennifer Hawkins and her herd of top models stole the show in the style-stakes while the usually shirtless True Blood star Joe Manganiello suited up to present Channel of the Year.

The LifeStyle Channel’s Selling Houses was proclaimed Subscribers’ Favourite Program while two of its three hosts, Andrew Winter and the self-proclaimed former bogan, Shaynna Blaze, named Favourite Male and Female Personalities.

The Nickelodeon kids took the spills from slime to stage with their armor-suited nod to Game of Thrones causing one of them to literally fall off stage. But they later went on to take the Most Outstanding Music Program.

As the night went on, Molly Meldrum hinted at an upcoming mini-series on his life to complement the planned Molly musical, before announcing the Best New Talent, “or whatever.” Channel [V]’s presenter search winner Marty Smiley took the title, graciously thanking his mentors “for taking a punt on me and backing a winner.”

Game of Thrones won the Favourite International Program while Showcase’s third season of Tangle proved the local industry favourite taking three awards including Most Outstanding Performance each for both a male and female, along with Most Outstanding Drama.

At the end of the evening, Fox Footy took the highly coveted channel of the year. ASTRA CEO Andrew Maiden brought the entire team up on stage (pictured) and proudly retold how, like many good ideas, it all started from a idealistic off-the-cuff chat that continued to grow. “As winner of Channel of the Year, Fox Footy offers subscription television viewers an experience unmatched by free-to-air networks,” he said. “Tonight the channel that covers AFL 24/7 has come away as a winner itself, taking out one of the industry’s most coveted trophies.”
