John Butterworth is stepping down from his chief executive role with the digital industry association, AIMIA, after almost nine years.
Butterworth (pictured), who joined AIMIA in 2004, said he is leaving to explore the commercial opportunities he can see “in the relentless march of digital into businesses more broadly”.
“When I joined AIMIA in mid-2004, the digital industry was still considered niche. The organisation itself only had two people on staff and a small membership base,” Butterworth said.
Now AIMIA has 11 staff, nine full-time and two half-time, and more than 400 member organisations.
“With our general manager [Corinne Franks] in place and it being AIMIA’s 21st birthday later this year, it’s the right time to step aside and allow an orderly transition to a new CEO with a fresh pair of eyes to lead AIMIA into the future,” he added.
A search committee to find Butterworth’s replacement has been formed with Harvey Nash’s managing director, Bridget Gray, to lead it.
Tim O’Neill, AIMIA president and joint Reactive MD, said: “We will obviously be sorry to see John go but understand his desire to explore new opportunities in the industry after many years in the role. He will leave AIMIA well prepared for the future.”
Since Butterworth joined as CEO in 2004 the membership base has exploded, it now boasts a year-round program of events, has attracted the support of digital businesses such as Microsoft, Google and Facebook and has developed industry standards and guides.
