30 Under 30: We Reveal What The Judges Are Looking For!

It’s less than a month until entries close for B&T’s 30 Under 30 Awards, presented by The Newspaper Works.

If there are any applicants out there still um-ing and ahh-ing about getting involved, some of the judges of the awards have shared what they’re looking for in applicants.

Matt Robinson, managing director of AnalogFolk will be on the hunt for two things:

Passion. Demonstrating a genuine passion for the industry and the great things that can be achieved when you throw yourself into something.

Entrepreneurialism. There’s still far too much bluster in our industry, and so I’ll be looking for action over words. People who have taken smart risks or ignored the norm, and genuinely made things happen for themselves, for their agencies, or more importantly for their clients.

Nicole McInnes, chief marketing officer for Pandora Radio says she’s looking for “curiosity, initiative, humility and imagination”.

It’s all about showing your personality, says Carolyn Maloney, talent and people consultant at MAD people (Media and ADvertising people).  “When I read the entry I want to get a sense of who you are as a person, what makes you stand out from the crowd and what you are passionate about,” she says. However she has some warnings for entrants.

“The references from their clients particularly receive higher scores and greater weighting particularly when a client can make comment on the value that person has added to their business in clear measures. Many entrants ask their direct managers to provide a reference and frankly some of these don’t say a lot. Be very careful and considered as to the references submitted. The submission and evaluation criteria is pretty clear but ensure you have clear measures as to what you have achieved.”

Ben Gunn, head of business development and commercial partnerships at Fairfax Media, is looking for people that approach things from a different angle.

People who are really driven by the desire to make a positive impact on the industry are always highly regarded,” he says. “It is important to be able to read proof points of the effect of their work and any link they can make to tangible outcomes to a business is also important.”

So get cracking on your submissions! Enter the awards here.
