WSFM’s reign as Sydney’s number one FM radio station has lasted only one ratings survey as 2Day FM steals back the crown.
Australian Radio Network’s (ARN) WSFM dropped back to second place in the third radio ratings survey of the year following a 1.5 percentage point drop in Monday to Sunday.
The fall allowed competitor 2Day FM to reclaim the title after it grew only slightly from 8.4% to 8.5% in the Nielsen survey which covered February 24 to March 30 and April 7 to May 11.
WSFM’s grip on the coveted title was loosened by a 1.3 point drop for its breakfast team Jonesy & Amanda and a 1.5 point fall in drive.
Jonesy & Amanda now sit on 7.6% behind their Southern Cross Austereo rivals Kyle & Jackie O who dropped 0.6 points to 9.6%.
Jeremy Simpson, Sydney general manager at SCA, said: “2Day FM continues to be the number one FM listening choice in Sydney. The station has a solid history of ratings wins and huge audiences, driven largely by the ever successful Kyle & Jackie O.”
2GB was the Sydney markets biggest winner, adding 1.3 points in breakfast to take a commanding 17% of listeners and 0.9 points in drive to 11.9%.
There was a bright spot for ARN as new Mix 106.5 breakfast team Sami Lukis & Yumi Stynes added one point to grow their share of Sydney’s breakfast listeners to 3.9%. The station also grew by 0.8 points in drive.
Smoothfm 95.3 matched Mix 106.5’s growth in breakfast, also adding one point to reach 3.9%.
The DMG Radio Australia owned station remained steady in drive on 4.6%.
Paul Jackson, group programme director DMG Radio Australia, told B&T he is “very happy” with the progress Smoothfm has made in Melbourne and Sydney.
“Today is smoothfm’s first birthday and to see both stations in the mid 5% range with audience growth of over 60% is a major achievement for a new radio brand.”
DMG station Nova 96.9 dropped slightly in both breakfast and drive. The station now sits on a 6.5% share in breakfast and 8.1% in drive after a drop of 0.8 points.
In Melbourne, Triple M has usurped Nova as the market’s third top FM station.
Triple M grew by 0.7 points in Monday to Sunday taking the share from Nova 100 which lost 0.7 points to fall to 7.3% behind Triple M’s 8.3%.
Triple M’s growth came from a 1.8 jump for its drive team Merrick and The Highway Patrol. The SCA owned station also gained 0.6 points in breakfast to take 8.5%.
In comparison, Nova 100 remained steady on 9.3% in drive and dropped only slight in breakfast to 6.8% but the 0.2 point decline was enough for it to be overtaken by Gold 104.3.
The 0.7 point gap between Mix 101.1 and Smoothfm 91.5 has remained in breakfast as both stations grow by just short of half a point.
3AW added one point to take a leading 18.2% of Melbourne’s morning radio listeners. In drive sport and talk station SEN added one point to take 5.6%.
ARN’s 97.3FM is the success story in Brisbane where its growth widened the market’s tight breakfast and drive slots.
In the previous survey 97.3FM was tied for first place in drive with B105 on 13.2%. A burst of 1.3 points has allowed 97.3FM to take the lead in drive with a 14.5% share.
The station now also leads the important breakfast slot with 12.3% after stealing 0.6 points from SCA-owned B105’s share of listeners.
Triple M’s upward trajectory continued in Brisbane where it added 1.3 points in breakfast to take 10.8% in Monday to Sunday the station added 1.1 points to take 11%.
Nova 106.9 grew by 0.9 points in breakfast to win a share of 11.8% and become the slot’s second most listened to station.
Nova 91.9 stands out as the biggest mover in Adelaide where it added 1.3 points to its Monday to Sunday share to become the second most listened to FM station with a share of 10.7%.
The Monday to Sunday growth was spurred on by a mammoth 2.2 point leap in breakfast where the DMG station now claims a 10.2% share of listeners.
The growth puts Nova 91.9 less than half a point behind Triple M which grew by 0.6 points to 10.5%.
Nova 91.9 won a further 0.9 points to take 11.6% of drive, overtaking SAFM which lost 1.1 points.
Mix 102.3 is now the number one station in Adelaide’s breakfast and drive slots.
Mix 102.3 overtook DMG’s Fiveaa in breakfast despite a 0.8 point drop to 13%.
The ARN station was able to overtake Fiveaa as the station lost 2.9 points to fall from 14.2% to 11.3%.
Mix 102.3 added one point in drive to take a leading 14.1% share and again overtook Fiveaa which added 0.4 points to claim 13.9%.
Triple M’s growth continued in Adelaide where it added 0.4 points to its Monday to Sunday share and grew by 0.6 in breakfast to take 10.5% and 1.4 points in drive to win 10.5%.
The latest survey revealed both highs and lows in Perth’s radio market.
Nova 93.7 now leads both breakfast and drive but it is 96FM that stands out having grown in both important slots and overall.

In Drive, Nova 93.7 grew by 1.4 points to take 15.2% ahead of Mix 94.5’s 13.2%.
Meanwhile, 96FM has rallied adding 1.3 points to its Monday to Sunday share take second place behind overall market leader Mix 94.5. 96FM now sits on 12.7% behind Mix’s 13.3% and ahead of Nova’s 12.3%.
96FM now claims 11.3% of both breakfast and drive listeners after adding 1.4 points and 1.1 points respectively.
Talk station 6PR took a hit, losing 1.4 points (the market’s largest overall drop) from its Monday to Sunday listenership.
In breakfast 6PR now sits on 9.2% after losing 2 points and on 8.4% in drive after a 1.1 point drop.
Overall, ARN’s national content director, Duncan Campbell, said the survey was a strong one: “We’re particularly pleased with the gains that MixFM is making”.
“This is the product of a long term strategy and we’ll continue to focus on delivering further increases as the year continues.
“97.3FM Brisbane and Mix 102.3 Adelaide continue to top their markets, leading overall and #1FM Breakfast.”
DMG’s Jackson says the survey result shows the network’s “dual station strategy playing out brilliantly”.
“DMG has had a very solid survey result with 7 of our 9 stations increasing share,” Jackson said.
