Attempting to bring 3D printing to the masses, eBay has launched a new iPhone app that allows customers to give their designs a third dimension.

eBay has made the Exact Beta app free to download on iTunes, and has taken on 3D printing start ups Sculpteo, Hot Pop Factory and MakerBot to create the pieces.

Users select from design templates including iPhone covers and jewelry, choose colours and materials such as plastic, wood and metal, and have their object delivered within two weeks.  The iPhone case is the most customisable with the option to feature names and phrases in a board array of colours compared to the other products.

The current range of templates reaches only 20, somewhat detracting from the freedom that the 3D printer’s wonder stems from. However, the diversity of designs is set to expand.
