Twitter has launched its new music discovery service, claiming it will “revolutionise” the way people link with new artists.

The Twitter #Music app, launched overnight in the US, is already available in Australia on web and iPhone, and has been created by the team behind Brisbane-based startup We Are Hunted, which revealed last week it had been acquired by the platform.

It will also be a boon for iTunes, Spotify and Rdio, as the only three platforms used to source music icurrently by the new app, although Twitter has said it will look at others as the service matures.

The platform works by monitoring Twitter activity, including tweets and engagement, to to detect which tracks are most popular, and emerging artists, and hero’s the accounts of musicians to see what they are tapping into.

In a blog post announcing the new service today, We Are Hunted founder Stephen Philips wrote: "Twitter and music go great together. People share and discover new songs and albums every day.

"Many of the most-followed accounts on Twitter are musicians, and half of all users follow at least one musician. This is why artists turn to Twitter first to connect with their fans — and why we wanted to find a way to surface songs people are tweeting about.

"We offered music artists an early look at the service. You can see some of their reactions below. We hope you like it, too."

However, Edge head of strategy Richard Parker said he has "reservations" about the new platform.

He said: “The space is crowded already and Twitter need to do something really cool to gain traction. The recommendation engine looks OK – it's throwing up things I'm interested in: but Spotify and LastFM already do that really well.

“What I'm really not sure about is the overall synergy between Twitter and Music. I follow a lot of people on Twitter, and most of the time it's not for their music taste.

“Why would I want to know what Shane Warne or Piers Morgan are listening to?”
