Leadership spill sees spike in Google searches

While State of Origin won the ratings last Wednesday night, Google analytics have shown there was far more interest online in the leadership challenge.

TV wasn’t the only screen Australians were glued to as they took to mobiles, tablets and desktops to search the leadership challenge. There were three times as many searches related to the leadership challenge than there was the Origin.

“Google recorded a huge spike in election-related searches throughout the day. From Kevin Rudd’s announcement at 5pm that he would contest the leadership, through to the final result, searches relating to the election rose tenfold,” said Google spokesperson, Johnny Luu.

Searches for Kevin Rudd’s name rose by nearly 100 fold over the 12 hour period leading up to the ballot. Searches for Julia Gillard’s name rose by 50 fold.

The leadership challenge can be watched in Google searches as Bill Shorten’s announcement of his support for Rudd saw searches for his name rising by 25 times nearly matching the search volume for “Julia Gillard” by 6pm. Searches on Gillard briefly overtook Rudd at 4pm when she appeared on Sky News to open up the leadership, however, Rudd remained the most-searched politician through the day.

The figures are illustrative of the rise in second screening where audiences multitask or search further information while watching television

Google will be keeping track of search trends in the lead up to the election.
