Cash-strapped city-siders ditch home phone and internet services

The number of mobile-only users in Australia is growing, as those aged 18-years and over snip their fixed-line cords and ditch home internet connections.

Close to 3.3 million Australians were mobile-only users at the end of 2012, as they replaced their fixed-line home phone with a mobile.

That figure is due to keep on rising according to the Australain Communications and Media Authority (ACMA).

The majority of consumers made the switch to save money (56%), 30% switched because they didn’t use the home phone as much and 12% because they were happier with their mobile service.

The number of mobile-only users is being driven by those aged between 25 and 34, with the age group contributing to 38% of the growth over the past year. The demographic also represents 38% of the total mobile-only population.

The majority of mobile-only users live in a metropolitan area (63%) and 66% are low-income earners, brining in an income of less than $50,000.

Mobile-only consumers are two and half times more likely to live in a shared household and are three-quarters less likely to bundle telecommunication services.

Home internet connections are also being left behind, with the number of people using their mobile as their only source of phone and internet services soaring to 70% in the 12 months to December 2012.

However the growth is off a small base, representing just 3% of those aged 18+, or about 480,000 people. Mobile-only users are driving the charge, with 35% of mobile-only users without a home internet connection.

Instead they access internet through their phone (45%). However 65% of mobile-only consumers still have home internet services, 81% with a wireless connection through a dongle, SIM card, modem or other options.
