A mobile milestone

This month marks the 10th anniversary of the MMS. And it’s changed beyond recognition since the early days.

In the past decade, multimedia message service – better known as MMS – has grown from 11,000 messages sent over the Telstra network in 2003 to between 1 and 1.5 million a day in 2013.

The number of MMS messages peaks on Fridays, at around 1.5 million.

Telstra is celebrating MMS’ 10th birthday by looking back at how things have changed with this infographic:

As reported in the Daily Telegraph, Telstra MMS and SMS technology manager Rob Sullivan recalled how the early days of MMS featured cameras that took pictures that were 0.1 megapixels and each message would take several minutes to send on the 2G mobile network.

He said: “There was also a lot of device variability in quality back then, so you weren’t always guaranteed it was going to get through.”

Telstra’s top 10 days for MMS:

1. Christmas Day

2. New Year ’s Eve

3. Novelty themed Christmas message (2006 – 2009)

4. Valentine’s Day

5. Spring Racing Carnival

6. Brisbane Floods (12 January, 2011)

7. Mother’s Day

8. Sydney Dust Storm (23 September 2009)

9. AFL and NRL Grand Finals

10. Cyclone Yasi (3 February 2011)
