The number of free to view digital television receivers sold in Australia has reached an all-time high of over 2 million. This figure, which equates to around 25% of Australia’s 7.8 million homes, is according to Digital Broadcasting Australia (DBA) and industry data collection agency GfK Informark.
The organisations found that during the period 1 October to 31 December 2006, sales reached 302,000 units; raising the cumulative total sales figure since digital television transmissions began, to over 2,300,000. These figures include the sales of set top boxes, personal video recorders and integrated digital television sets but do not account for other types of digital television receivers such as digital television receiver cards for personal computers.
The average monthly sales volume of digital television receivers to retailers and installers during the fourth quarter of 2006 reached a new high of over 100,600 units. This rise continues the growth trend for sales of digital television receivers with four consecutive quarters of growth during 2006 and compares to a monthly average of 72,600 units for the December 2005 quarter.
Strong retail demand for LCD and plasma televisions equipped with integrated digital tuners meant that reported sales of integrated digital televisions represented 53% of total digital television receivers sold to Australian retailers and installers.
