New name, new look for leading ACP computer title Hudson Bawden
THE country’s biggest selling computer title Australian Personal Computer will be renamed and revamped this month in an attempt to keep it at the top of its category.
Reacting to changes in both the magazine industry and personal hardware market, Australian Personal Computer namewill be shortened to APC to denote its broadened focus.
Editor David Flynn said the name change allowed the magazine to broaden its content by freeing itself of people’s perceptions of what a “personal computer” is.
Flynn said the magazine was being updated in a similar way to how people update their hardware and software. He said the title’s face-lift would include better paper stock, more white space on the page, larger illustrations and more entry points to the page.
“The magazine traditionally was very much as you would expect a computer mag to be—a lot of text, not a lot of pictures,” Flynn said.
The content focus of the magazine will also change to reflect tech-heads’ broader interests, including PS2 games, DVDs, IT careers and tech lifestyle section.
Flynn said APC readers were early adopters of technology who were sensitive to an item’s performance rather than its price.
The latest Audit Bureau of Circulations figures show Australian Personal Computer leading its category with a circulation of 63,237, ahead of Australian PC World, which has a circulation of 60,579 and PC User, with a circulation of 55,360.
Flynn said now was the perfect time for the magazine to re-jig its format, to be ready for next year when he predicts the economy will pick up, boosting magazine and tech markets.
