World Cup: 99.6% Of All TVs In Iceland Tuned In For Argentinan Match

Typically, when it comes to Australian TV, a program’s thought to have done well if it goes over a million viewers – or about five per cent of the population. That rises to about 15 per cent for big spectacles like AFL grand finals or the State of Origin. Read last night’s Socceroos’ numbers here.

However, those numbers are nothing on the football loving folk of Iceland.

Over the weekend a whopping 99.6 per cent of all Icelandic TVs were tuned-in to watch the nation’s World Cup group stage match against football powerhouse Argentina (which ended in a 1-1 draw).

That’s pretty much every TV in the country, which boasts a population of just 340,000 people.

Currently, SBS is getting about 12 per cent audience share for its World Cup coverage (although that doesn’t include Socceroo matches).

The viewers would have no doubt been in raptures when they saw Iceland’s goalkeeper Hannes Halldorsson come up with a huge save when he stopped a Lionel Messi penalty kick, keeping the team very much alive to move on to the Round of 16.

Iceland plays Nigeria in its next group stage match later on Friday.
