A stock image search for "women laughing alone with tablets" delivers three times as many results as "men laughing with tablets".




The world of stock photos has an abundance of women laughing alone with their tablets.

We may never know what they’re laughing at (GIFs of babies falling down? The state of the U.S. economy?), but it’s certainly entertaining to watch from afar.

One thing we can be sure of: Women Laughing Alone With Tablets is quickly becoming the next Women Laughing Alone With Salad, a 2011 meme that started as a photo series on The Hairpin and then became a popular Tumblr.

Well, swap the salad for a tablet — and voila.

Laura Mayer, an associate editor for On the Media who noted the trend last week, explained that after watching a Kindle Fire ad featuring a laughing woman and her tablet, she decided to investigate.

A quick Google Images scan revealed a plethora of women, alone, laughing with their tablets, from photo wire services like AP and Getty. Iterations of those key words — “women laughing alone with tablets” — turned up nearly three times as many results as “men laughing with tablets”.
