It’s comedy and kids ahoy for ABC next year, with the public broadcaster announcing its strategy for 2016 at its Upfronts last night.

As per reports in The Australian, the ABC will launch the ABC Comedy Showroom, a comedic initiative where comedians will create their own pilot episodes, and viewers will choose one of them for the comedians continue into a full season.

Aunty will also up the ante on its iView selection for next year, following suit with various other streaming video on demand offerings and streaming exclusive short-form content.

To also make us feel old, kid’s program Play School is turning 50 this year, welcoming a new member, Miranda Tapsell.

A few teen dramas are also set to air, such as Nowhere Boys, Prisoner Zero and Tomorrow When The War Began.

Another big show coming to the broadcaster will be Barracuda, a TV adaptation from Christos Tsiolkas’s novel. The show will reportedly star Rachel Griffiths.

Content professionals blog IF quoted ABC director of TV Richard Finlayson as saying: “As the national broadcaster we will continue our commitment to Australian content, delivering a high-quality, deep and diverse slate.”
