Tuesday TV Wrap: The Melbourne Cup Peaks At 1.84 Million Viewers

Some 1.84 million Aussies tuned in to Channel Seven yesterday to watch Cross Counter win the 2018 Melbourne Cup.

The number was slightly up on last year’s 1.8 million but down on 2016’s two million and 2015’s 2.07 million.

It needs to be noted that the figures are metropolitan free-to-air OzTAM numbers and only include people watching on home TVs and not viewers at pubs, clubs, offices, racetracks or in regional areas.

The race – Seven’s final coverage before it shifts to 10 in 2019 – helped the broadcaster to a Tuesday win with 32.7 per cent audience share. Nine took second and 25.5 per cent, the ABC snared third spot with 16.9 per cent, 10 had to settle for fourth and 16.5 per cent and SBS took home 8.4 per cent.

The Cup also gave Seven a halo effect, its 6pm news taking 1.08 million. Bride & Prejudice had 774,000, The Good Doctor had 678,000, Home And Away pulled 640,000, The Chase had 617,000 and The Resident had 239,000.

Nine’s best was its 6pm news with 889,000, followed by ACA with 717,000, Hot Seat had 487,000, the worrying Family Food Fight managed only 402,000, The Big Bang Theory was a neat 400,000 and Kath & Kim with 199,000.

Over at Ten, its best was once again Ambulance Australia, however, it dipped to 520,000 from its debut highs. The Project had 481,000, 10 News First had 385,000, FBI pulled 310,000, Pointless had 241,000 and NCIS: LA managed 183,000.

The ABC’s evening ran thus: 7pm news (719,000), 7.30 (629,000), Barrenjoey Road (413,000), Ask The Doctor (394,000), Nolan (225,000) and Grand Designs with 150,000.

Over at the SBS, Michael Portillo’s Abandoned Britain did the business with 275,000.
