Psych Up co-host, Matthew, is an international speaker, author and creative consultant to clients such as The Black Dog Institute, The Golden Door Elysia, Geelong Grammar amongst other major corporates.

Johnstone says he’s delighted to be co-hosting the sessions and looks forward to providing practical advice to young media professionals.

“You just have to watch the Gruen Transfer to know that media can be a fun, fast and fascinating industry to be in. Yet, whether you’re a creative, a planner, a producer, a suit, a media buyer; it’s highly stressful and full on – it made my hair go grey.”

“We can’t stop the stressors associated with the business but we can learn great coping skills to deal with it, such as building better resilience, developing better breathing techniques and learning mindfulness.

“I’m really excited to be part of Psych Up because advertising and marketing was my life for 15 years – it taught me the art of communicating simply and effectively,” Johnstone added.

Over 30 people attended the seminar at Carat Sydney offices on Friday, one of 11 sessions scheduled for the coming months.

Amanda Buckley, head of investment, Woolworths Group at Carat says the sessions speak to their commitment to cultivate a healthy and supportive work culture.

“A career in media is dynamic and rewarding, but the speed at which we move can be demanding. Having effective work-based and personal frameworks to deal with stress is a big consideration for us, and we’re dedicated to helping our staff succeed wherever we can.”

“Psych Up sessions and other health initiatives Tonic offer form part of Carat’s ‘Friday Morning Media Media Breakfasts’, a platform we use to support our staff professionally and emotionally.” Buckley added.

The ‘Psych Up’ initiative is running for the next two months across 16 agency offices around the country. It forms part of a wider ‘Healthy Living’ program designed by Tonic Health Media to improve the overall health of people in the media industry. Their ‘Chew Up’ healthy eating series and ‘Tune Up’ exercise program is scheduled for later in the year.
