An unfortunately timed eyelid malfunction from our Prime Minister has unleashed the wrath of social media upon Tony Abbott and his eye.

Upon answering questions from the public yesterday about the Federal Budget, the camera filming the radio show Abbott appeared on caught the ruffle of his eyelid when pensioner Gloria phoned in and said she worked on an adult sex line.

The conversation began amicably enough with Abbott extending a greeting to Gloria from Warbuton.

Gloria posed the question to Abboty as to whether he would like that your mother or grandmother was in her situation.

“I am a 67-year-old pensioner, three chronic incurable medical conditions – two life-threatening. I just survive on about $400 a fortnight after I pay my rent and I work on an adult sex line to make ends meet,” she said.

It was this very second that Abboty poised his one-eyed blink to offscreen radio presenter Jon Faine at 774 ABC Melbourne, coupled with what some are suggested as a “smirk”.

This morning on Nine’s Today Show Abbott told host Karl Stefanovic that he shouldn’t have done it.

“Look, I was looking at Jon Faine, he was smiling at me and I winked back at him,” Abbott said. “I shouldn’t have done it, Karl.”

Social media hammered into the wink, some suggesting Abbott was a “creep”, while others questioned whether Abbott just had grapefruit pulp in his eye.

Gifs have already started of the infamous wink and cartoons and memes are also flooding social media, such as the below from Twitter user Broelman.

Apparently Gloria only had one call yesterday, and that lasted four minutes.

What do you think of Abbott's wink?
