Fairfax Media’s Sydney Morning Herald (SMH) has given its website a new makeover to make it adaptive on any device. And in a piece outlining the change, Darren Goodsir, editor-in-chief, showed off a screenshot of what the original SMH website used to look like.

Check out this doozy.

Noting the audience shift to people reading news not only on desktop now, the new site has a “clearer and cleaner design to make it easier to find and read our stories”.

“Our users are some of the fastest shifting digital consumers in Australia, with more and more not only reading on their desktops, but also consuming news on their smartphones and tablets,” wrote Goodsir.

“Readers value our quality content, but they want it fast, and they are using multiple devices throughout the day.

“SMH.com.au has never had a bigger, more loyal readership. The latest Nielsen Digital Ratings give us a monthly unique audience of 5.1 million, and we wanted to make the site more attractive, simpler and user-friendly for you, our users.”

The site has been in beta mode for the past few months as Fairfax test and tweak, and hear feedback from users, some suggestions which have already been implemented.
