British Vogue Announces First-Ever Male Editor

Fashionista bible Vogue has announced its first-ever male editor-in-chief in the title’s 100 year history after it was announced the famed stylist Edward Enninful (pictured above) is set to take the reins of the the UK edition.

The 45-year-old Ghanaian born Enninful will take over the magazine’s editorship in August when incumbent, Alexandra Shulman, steps down after 25 years at the title.

A male editor has shocked some of London’s fashion elite, however, the move is seen as giving a younger voice to the often stuffy title.

“It’s really great news,” a senior industry figure said told The Times in the UK. “Vogue has for too long traded on its history instead of being in tune with the times.”

Last year Enninful, a former model, was given an OBE by the Queen for his contribution to the British fashion industry.

Announcing the appointment, Condé Nast International CEO Jonathan Newhouse said Enninful was “an influential figure in the communities of fashion, Hollywood and music which shape the cultural zeitgeist”, adding that “by virtue of his talent and experience, Edward is supremely prepared to assume the responsibility of British Vogue.”

The departing Shulman added:”Edward is an exceptionally talented stylist who will no doubt bring an exciting new creative aesthetic to the magazine.

Every Vogue editor arrives with their own range of talents and experience and Edward is very known, respected and liked within the fashion industry. I look forward to finding out his plans as soon as possible and working with him over the next few months of transition so that British Vogue continues to be the leading magazine in this market,” she said.
