Seven Launches Legal Action Against Nine Over Reality Cooking Shows

Channel Seven is taking Nine to court over allegations Nine’s new reality cooking show The Hot Plate has infringed Seven’s copyright of its show My Kitchen Rules.

Media reports say Seven has lodged an application with the Federal Court, with a judge to decide whether Seven has a case against Nine and could seek damages.

Seven issued a statement to media which read: “Channel Nine’s on-air promotions for its programme had a strange sense of deja vu.

“We then saw it. We believe Nine has appropriated Seven’s My Kitchen Rules original format and related production elements, and contravened copyright.

“That’s why we’re in court.”

A Nine spokesperson said: “The Hotplate is an original format developed by Nine and we will be defending the claims vigorously.”

The networks are expected to appear in court on Tuesday.

Nine’s The Hot Plate debuted July 28 this year as a new reality cooking show for Nine.

Seven’s My Kitchen Rules has been a ratings juggernaut for the network since 2010 with its sixth season this year pulling in more than two million viewers in the finale.
