It remains a ratings juggernaut for Nine and now the next location for 2018’s series of The Block has apparently been revealed.

News’ Herald Sun is reporting that the focus of this year’s series will be an1850s mansion in Melbourne’s fashionable inner south-east.

The St Kilda building is currently being used as a cheap backpacker’s hostel with a “seedy reputation” and a room for just $18 a night, according to the report.

B&T contacted Nine for confirmation of the story, however a spokesperson issued a quick “no comment”.

It’s unclear how much Nine has had to pay to buy the building, but with the gold rush-era mansion making up five separate residents you’d think a price tag of $6-7 million would have been a minimum at least.

“It is believed that the producers scored the property in an off-market deal after approaching one of the owners,” News has reported.

Fairfax’s Domain is reporting that the owner of the building recently died and left the building to three beneficiaries.

Current residents at the backpackers have been told they will need to leave in coming months while Block producers will submit plans to council in the coming months.

“Port Phillip mayor Bernadene Voss said the property was subject to heritage control, meaning any demolition or eternal alterations would require planning approval,” Domain reported.

Nine has not yet disclosed a launch date for this year’s series.
