It’s been a tough few days for the folk at Nine’s A Current Affair. Not only was its offices raided by NSW Police on Thursday and senior reporter, Ben McCormack, arrested and charged with child pornography offences, now comes the news that Karl Stefanovic is apparently eyeing Tracy Grimshaw’s ACA hosting spot.
Stefanovic has made no secret he’s keen on a change from the 12 years of early starts he’s had at Today; however, many speculated it would be in a senior journalistic role at 60 Minutes or as Nine’s US correspondent.
However, the latest edition of the Seven-owned New Idea magazine says A Current Affair is high on his list of next career objectives.
It comes as the 42-year-old presenter – who recently separated from his wife of 21 years – is said to be “in negotiations” with Channel Nine bosses about his “future and career goals”.
According to a source in New Idea, Stefanovic wants to “make the move into something more serious than what he is doing on Today“.
Grimshaw is apparently keen to carry on in her role as the face of ACA and Nine has scotched any rumours of a Stefanovic move as nothing more than scuttlebutt and rumour-mongering by rival Seven.
News of a potential move comes as Stefanovic takes another week’s leave from the Today this week. Fans of the show are none to happy with his infrequent appearances and it appears to be gifting audiences to Seven’s Sunrise who have reclaimed the number one breakfast position.
It also follows on from last week’s controversy where Peter Stefanovic’s (younger brother of Karl’s) wedding to Nine presenter Sylvia Jeffreys was heavily promoted on Today amid claims the show spruiked the rings, dresses, suits and hotel on the show in favour of heavy discounts. However, the nuptials proved a boon for Today who nudged ahead of Sunrise in viewer numbers 309,000 to 288,000.
