Reports: ABC To Axe Late Night Current Affairs Show Lateline And The Link

The ABC is set to axe its late night current affairs program Lateline as part of a shake-up to its news and journalism.

The Guardian is today reporting the show, hosted by Emma Alberici, is set to go and be replaced by new investigative and specialist reporting teams.

It has also been reported that Stan Grant’s Friday evening show The Link will also get the axe. The Link was only introduced earlier in the year after the Friday night version of 7.30 was culled to save costs.

Interestingly, the show faced the axe back in 2014 but was saved after a public campaign swayed the ABC board to save it.

Sadly for Lateline, it costs many millions to make and rarely attracts a late night audience over the 200,000-mark. It’s understood Alberici will stay with the broadcaster in some sort of economics reporter capacity.

The news is another blow to the ABC’s news credentials after arguably its best current affairs reporter, Chris Uhlmann, jumped ship to Channel Nine in late September.
