Want to shed some extra pounds without heading to the gym? Well, according to Cosmopolitan magazine a malignant carcinoid tumour of the appendix is set to be the next dieting craze.

The US version of the magazine is in big trouble after it picked up a story from the Australian edition of Melbourne mother Simone Harbinson (pictured above) who had a harrowing ordeal with cancer of the appendix and subsequently dropped 20 kilos following the ordeal.

However, US Cosmo picked-up Harbinson’s story and unfortunately tweeted it out as a legitimate fitness/weight loss story under the headline, “How this woman lost 44 pounds without ANY exercise”. See the offending tweet below:

The original story of Ms Harbinson’s appeared on Cosmo’s Australian website in February and appeared a genuine “young mum battles cancer” story. Read it here.

After being “diagnosed with a severe kidney infection,” doctors discovered 31-year-old Simone Harbinson had “tested positive for malignant carcinoid tumor of the appendix.” She underwent multiple surgeries and suffered harrowing complications.

After she was diagnosed with “post-traumatic stress disorder triggered by her cancer diagnosis,” she turned to food, later losing weight on a diet called The Bod. She could not exercise, explaining, “she’s still recovering from surgery, she isn’t physically able to work out the way she used to before her cancer diagnosis.”

How the US version managed to twist Harbinson’s unfortunate tale into a weight loss story is anyone’s guess, however, Twitter – as you’d expect – as exploded with outrage. Cosmo has since changed the headline to: “A Serious Health Scare Helped Me Love My Body More Than Ever.”
