Not content with just the rights for the English Premier League, Optus has secured the broadcast and digital rights for global football (soccer) tournament the International Champions Cup.

The Aussie telco will show fifteen matches and three simulcast matches of the pre-season tournament across its Optus Sport channel on subscription TV services, Foxtel and Fetch TV.

Optus has forged a partnership with Nine to broadcast these matches, however Nine retains the exclusive broadcast of the three Australian games.

The news comes after Optus shelled out $63 million annually for three years of the rights to the English Premier League, and then copped a heap of flak after revealing it would only be available to Optus customers for a price.

However, newly promoted product marketing head, Ben White, said he recognises football fans don’t want delays in their sport. “Securing the live rights to the International Champions Cup further demonstrates Optus’ commitment to delivering exciting live football experiences to our customers.

“This partnership, teamed with the ability to view and access high quality content across multiple platforms with our new Optus Sport offering, makes Optus an attractive option for customers as we continue to bring them closer to the action with game-changing football content through the likes of the EPL, the FIFA World Cup and the FIFA Confederations Cup,”
