Melbourne Cup Ratings Down On Last Year, But Streaming Gets Seven Over The Line

If your offices are anything like the B&T ones, you’ll be bleak-eyed and not at all bushy-tailed this morning, nursing rather large hangovers and giant bacon and egg rolls. But we did catch the Race that stops a nation yesterday, and so did a lot of you for that matter.

Per OzTAM figures of the five metro cities, 1.986 million Aussie viewers tuned in to catch Almandin’s win, and despite this being a lower figure than last year’s 2.07 million, fails to count people who watched it with 20-odd mates outside of their homes, because everyone knows you don’t watch the Cup alone.

The Cup presentation nabbed 1.690 million viewers in the metro region, while 1.405 million checked out the pre-race commentary.

Taking into account those live-streaming it via Seven, an extra 575,000 Australians watched the race, which is 18 per cent up on last year’s live-streaming audience of 300,000.

Through a partnership between Twitter and the Victoria Racing Club, Twitter also streamed the nation-stopping race, the first Twitter live streaming deal the company has announced outside of the United States.

Seven dominated the ratings yesterday, with the pre, during and post-race action taking out the top three most watched spots, followed by Seven News and Today Tonight rounding out the top five in preliminary figures.

Nine’s The Block followed on with 980,000 viewers, well above Seven’s other evening return of First Dates, which sat at 798,000.
