The McGrath Foundation has unveiled an innovative light installation at Vivid Sydney, designed to create a shining message of support for those touched by breast cancer. This unique projection, called the McGrath Foundation Mosaic is featured on the AMP ‘Sydney Cove’ Building for the entirety of Vivid Sydney, the world’s largest festival of light, music and ideas.

The concept behind the McGrath Foundation Mosaic, was to ask Australians to upload their photos and messages of support online, to then be projected as a unique light installation that portrays the many faces and stories of those touched by breast cancer.

“We are absolutely blown away that thousands of Australians have got behind this idea, allowing this installation to become a truly authentic representation of the many faces of breast cancer,” said Glenn McGrath, co-founder and president of the McGrath Foundation.

Thousands of photos and messages of support were uploaded over three months, from people in each capital city as well as from rural and regional towns and suburban communities across the nation.

McGrath Foundation CEO Petra Buchanan said, “The McGrath Foundation Mosaic is an incredibly moving installation in memory of Jane’s legacy, reflecting the many families touched by the McGrath Foundation and by breast cancer in general.

“In addition to the thousands of faces included we have selected a face from each state to be highlighted as a featured image. The installation will also include much-loved singer and actress, the late Belinda Emmett who was very close to the McGrath Foundation and our own Jane McGrath,” continued Petra.

One of these women, Amy Johnstone from Margaret River in WA, was selected as the winner of a competition with Destination NSW, the NSW Government’s tourism and major events agency, and the McGrath Foundation, and has travelled to Sydney with her family, to see her face lit up as the McGrath Foundation Mosaic is unveiled.

“I feel privileged to be able to share my story and hopefully help someone else get through their own breast cancer experience. It’s a very unique opportunity and a real honour to be representing families going through breast cancer,” said winner, Amy Johnstone.

A number of high profile ambassadors have also shown their support, including Dannii Minogue, Natalie Bassingthwaighte, Johanna Griggs and Mick Fanning, who have posted their photos and heartfelt words to feature in the mosaic.

The McGrath Foundation Mosaic will be projected on the side of AMP ‘Sydney Cove’ Building in Young Street, as part of Vivid Sydney, from 27 May until 18 June. People visiting are encouraged to take photos of the installation and then share their own message of support for people going through breast cancer using the hashtags #mcgrathmosaic and #vividsydney.
