Academy Award nominated filmmaker Morgan Spurlock will visit Australia this December to judge GetUp’s #ReefReels short film competition.

Spurlock, who is best known for his documentaries Super Size Me and Where in the World is Osama Bin Laden, will be one of four judges choosing the top films.

The winning film will be screened at Tropfest and the filmmaker will receive a $10,000 cash prize.

“This is a unique opportunity for film-makers to showcase their work globally. Even better, it’s for a great cause,” said Spurlock.

“I can’t wait to see the talent and content that comes out of this competition – we might find the next David Attenborough or James Cameron,” he said.

#ReefReels is open to filmmakers across the globe, with amateurs and professionals battling it out for the chance to have their film shown live to around 150,000 people at Tropfest on December 7, 2014.

Entries need to do just one thing: inspire people to protect Australia’s iconic Great Barrier Reef.

With the Reef under threat from massive dredging developments, shipping movements and climate change, filmmakers now have a chance to play their part in saving one of the world’s seven natural wonders.

“The government’s backdown on dumping dredge spoil in the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park is good, but nowhere near enough,” said GetUp’s campaigns director Paul Oosting.

“It shows community anger is cutting through the lobbyists and the spin – right around the country and the world, people want to see the Reef saved.”

#ReefReels is extending the deadline, giving filmmakers until November 30 to submit their entries.
