Inside The Mind Of Executive Producer For NOVA’s Smallzy’s Surgery, Zach La Cava!

In between Keeping up with the Kardashians and changing every conversation to resemble a Beyonce song, Zach La Cava is the executive producer of one of NOVA Entertainment’s most successful night shows, Smallzy’s Surgery. Here he gives us a run down on his love of music and his passion for radio.

What’s your proudest career achievement?

Without wanting to sound too lame, I am proud to come to work every day and work on a number one rating national radio show. There is never a boring day working with Smallzy and the Surgery team but my proudest achievements are the overseas broadcasts I’ve produced, covering international events including the MTV EMAs in Glasgow, the Hunger Games Mockingjay Part 1 world premiere in London last year and the Grammys in LA this year.

And the most cringe worthy?

My most cringe worthy moment would hands down be the time we played a game of ‘Man Butt or Lady Butt’ on the show with Adam Lambert blindfolded and out of all the butts he picked mine as a ‘lady butt’! It’s been awkward every time I’ve seen Adam since.

What’s one thing you’d change about the industry if you could?

Radio is a fantastic industry that allows my passion for music and celebrity pop culture to be part of the job every day. If I could change anything it would only be that radio receives the recognition it deserves for the content produced every single day on multiple platforms.

If you weren’t doing this job, what would you be doing?

Part of what I love about working in radio is the music so if I had to do something else it would be with music. I could happily see myself either at a record label or managing artists.

What’s your ultimate career goal?

I love the immediacy and connection that radio has with its audience so I would like to continue growing, learning and contributing as the industry evolves. One day it would be nice to EP a show for a powerhouse outlet like Beats 1 on Apple Music or in television for the E! Network out of LA that has such a large international footprint.

Favourite campaign of all time?

It’s hard to pin point one campaign, but Apple always hit it out of the park for me. From their early 2000s all the way iTunes ads featuring a dancing silhouette on different hyper coloured backgrounds to their current black and white ‘Discover Apple Music’ features, Apple beautifully execute everything they put their name to.

Reality TV – yay or nay?

It’s a yay from me. I wouldn’t be doing my job if I wasn’t keeping up with the Kardashians each week!

Tea or coffee?

Coffee for sure! And twice on Sundays.

What’s your quirkiest attribute?

Anyone who knows me well would agree I have an undeniable ability to relate any situation or conversation back to the lyrics of a Beyoncé song.
