Well-known radio duo Hamish Blake and Andy Lee have announced they will not be returning to the radio waves at the end of 2017 to focus more on their TV commitments.

According to news.com.au, the boys made the shock announcement at the end of their 2016 show on Friday.

“It’s a funny thing to call it a year out,” Blake said.

“It feels a bit like we’re making a big deal about dessert when we haven’t finished eating our entrees yet.

“This has been the first time we’ve known for sure what we want to do, so we wanted to let our listeners know so they can come on the ride together and it can be a really fun celebratory year and we can go out with a bang.”

Blake said it felt right to be going out on a high.

“We’ve never loved doing radio as much as we love doing it now,” he said.

“That’s a perfect time to end – we’re not ending tomorrow, we’ve still got another full year, we can really savour it.”

Lee said the pair considered quitting their drive-time radio gig this year, news.com.au reported.

“But we were just having too much fun,” he said. “We just had to keep going.”

Meanwhile, The Australian reported that Southern Cross Austereo is advancing discussions to pair up Triple M host Ed Kavalee with hit105’s Abby Coleman for a new Sydney-based show to replace the Hamish & Andy show.

Blake and Lee formed a comedy duo in 2003 after meeting while studying commerce at the University of Melbourne.

The pair hosted a radio show on the Student Youth Network and a TV sketch show called Radio Karate, before becoming a household name as the weekday drive-time hosts on the Hit Network.
